My Main task in media is designing and producing a front cover, contents page and double spread for a new music magazine. My work will be produced using Adobe Photoshop and Indesign.
My first task set is an analysis of two magazine covers from my chosen genre and analysis of one contents page and a double page spread.
I've chosen the genre ''dance.'' I've found two magazines that fit this genre, they are ''Mixmag'' and ''DJ.'' I'm going to analyse these magazines front covers, also use a contents page and double page spread from one of these magazines to write up an anaylsis on them. By writing an analysis of a magazine of the same genre it will help me design my own music magazine, as these other magazines are aiming for the same audiences.
Here are my magazines covers:
DJ: Mixmag:

Firstly I'm anaylsing DJ mag is a magazine about Drum and Bass, Dance and Electronic music. DJ Magazine has just used ''DJ'' for the title, i think this because it is catchy and is connected to the magazine. The reason why i say it's connected with the magazine is becuase DJ, main readers are people aspiring to be DJ's. The font used for ''DJ'' is Sans serif which makes it appeal to the younger audience, it is also bold and its quite bright in colour, which gives it a statement. I think they have done this so the reader can reconise magazine and i think it wil also interrest the reader, as its quite fun and fresh.
They have also used yellow and white colours for the smaller fonts, i think they have chosen this as the yellow stands out and the white matches some of the colours in the background and goes with the picture of the dove in the magazine. Which makes the colours blend in the magazine, even though some of the background is white the writing still stands out as it is outlined with black. Although the colours blend i also think they contrast, as the text colors are bright and bold colours the picture has more pure, natural colours, which gives a contrast of pure but vibrant.
The use of language for this magazine is informal, as subheadings aren't full sentences, which makes it quick to read and more exciting.
Dj Magazine has a barcode and a date (Oct 08.) there is also a price for UK and overseas. DJ has 142 pages. The main story for this magazine is DJ Josh Gabriel and his new album.
Now, I'm analysing Mixmag, Mixmag is a British dance/club music magazine. Its main audiences are around 18-30 years old as this is the age range of people that are more likely to enjoy the clubbing scene. The title for Mixmag, is in sans serif which again is more appealing to a younger audience. It is also bold even though its white in colour it still stands out as they have used capital letters and kept the colours quite limited in this issue.
They have used 4 main colours in this issue, black, white, lime green and red. The black is not a dominant colour in the magazine issue, and they have used it very well as they have used it for the background, which makes the white and green (which aren't normally that dominant colours) stand out. So rather having bright colours like Dj magazine, they used colours that aren't bold but then have made then bold putting them on a Black background.
The image used for this issue works really well, as they have faded out the edges and layered over the text. The colours in the image blend with the text as the image is mainly white, with black and white parts. The picture is of one of the chemical brothers which is a well known band, that are very succesful.
Mixmag has a barcode, price for UK and Overseas. Mixmag also contains 138 pages.
